Keeping up with the Jones's isn’t always an easy thing to do, unless of course, you are one of them. On April 30th the Wisconsin East division kicked off its season on the Wolf River in Winneconne, Wisconsin. 32 teams blasted off in calm but cool 32-degree conditions. When the weigh in was complete and the final weights were in, Jim Jones of Big Bend and brother Bob Jones of Racine, Wisconsin finished in first place with an impressive bag of Largemouth and Smallmouth bass weighing 17.51 pounds. The duo targeted their fish on main river points using ISG tubes and Brovarney Jigs. Although Jim is no stranger to the tournament scene his brother Bob was actually participating in his first tournament. Way to go Jim and Bob!

The Jones's limit was more than enough to hold off second place finishers Jim Barczak of Fremont and Mike Mayan of Rosendale, who weighed in with 15.58 pounds. Like the first place team, Barczak and Mayan also caught their fish on main river points using ISG tubes, Green Pumpkin to be exact. Mayan commented that one of the keys to their success was finding water not being occupied by other fisherman. “Finding unused water was a big factor to our success. In several of our spots we had to follow other competitors, fish a little differently or adjust to the many other recreational fisherman out on the water.” Finishing in third was the father son team Art and Joe Sukawatey of Greendale, Wisconsin with 13.89 pounds. In fourth were Jeff St. Clair of Neenah and Rick Hartwig from Waupun with 13.71 pounds. St. Clair commented that they had a great day on the water but just couldn’t find that “Kicker” fish they needed to close the gap on the leaders. In fifth place were Chris Cox of Appleton and Jim Flannigan of Green Bay with 13.66 pounds. Gary Austin and Joe Woods of Freemont rounded out the top six with 13.21 pounds.

The MG Lures Big Bass award honors went to two teams via a tie at 4.39 pounds. Barczak/ Mayan and Cox/ Flannigan split the prize money evenly. 15 teams brought limits to the scale and a total of 111 fish were caught. What a great start to the 2005 season!

Friday night was equally rewarding for the anglers. Oshkosh Community Church hosted the pre-tournament meeting in their Connections Café and Custom Interiors and Canvas of Winneconne was the dinner sponsor. After an excellent chicken dinner, including a Fishers of Men cake made by Steve Brooks, Wisconsin East division chaplain Mike Rhoe shared with us from the scripture and from his heart about how God is real and how he loves fishing. Thanks for the encouragement Mike! After a breakdown of the rules and boat draws, the evening ended with several sponsor door prizes including three packs of Stump Bumper Jigs and a beautiful wildlife print donated by local artist and FOM angler Jason Loewe of Ripon. According to Wisconsin East division director Chris Jones, “This first event was a huge success! To have over thirty boats participate and to have everything run so smoothly is a testament to all of the volunteers and sponsors who helped make this event possible. I’m already looking forward to Big Green Lake!”
