2004 Tournament Results
Mississippi River April 24th, 2004

Mike Mattis and Ken Snow topped a surging field of a record 50 boats to win
the April 24 Wisconsin Fishers of Men tournament on the Mississippi River
Pools 4-5. They needed nearly every ounce of their 16.49 lb. limit of smallmouth
bass to hold off a number of heavy weights. The team caught several limits
of legal fish on the rocks and wing dams as the fish were staging for the
spawn. Tubes, spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits were the most productive. The duo
also ended up with a beautiful 4.69 smallmouth to win the big bass prize.
To top off their incredible weekend Snow was the Kistler rod raffle winner.
Coming in a close 2nd was the team of Mark Myers and Jon Blood who was apparently
fishing his first tourney. Their small boat and 25 h.p. motor was important
to accessing difficult to reach backwaters. They caught a limit of largemouth
weighing 16.11lbs. on spinnerbaits and jerkbaits. Coming in third place was
All-Terrain Tackle staff member Chris Gulden and his partner Paul Strege.
They fished current breaks in the backwaters and caught 15.25 lbs., mainly
in the morning. The 2nd big bass was caught by the 4th place team of Michael
Schnur and Craig Tanner. The weather was a bit chilly, but not bad for April.
Great job everybody!
Pepin United Methodist Church was once again a gracious host. The food served
really hit the spot and the fellowship was tremendous. The youth group from
the church helped serve the food and a big thank you to everyone who helped
contribute to their upcoming mission trip to Africa. Our main speaker was
the editor of the In-Fisherman magazine, Steve Quinn. Quinn inspired us all
to serve God by serving others. He also talked about growing closer to God.
Pastor Kennedy of Pepin United also told us that God had us all there for
a reason and if you hadn’t yet committed your life to Jesus, now is the the
time. It was especially awesome to have so many boats. Thanks to all who helped
out to make this event run smoothly. Let’s keep it up. 10 more boats and we
could have given away another $1,000, if a Triton boat would have come in
first. I am capping Wapogasset off at 40 boats, so get your money in now.
Our next event is at Lake Wapogasset in Amery, Wisconsin. The Friday night
meeting will be at Lake Wapogasset Bible Camp. This is the same place where
we were at last year. The # is 715 268-8434. We will meet at 6 pm for a spaghetti
dinner. Let me know ASAP if you’d like to stay in a cabin there for $20 a
person. Bring you own blankets and pillow. Rusty Rausch, Rainy Lake fishing
guide, teacher, and pastor will be our speaker. Wapogasset holds lots of fish,
but the key will be in finding the bigger fish to win. Please be off the water
by 5:30 pm and the lake is off limits Monday-Thursday. The ease-off and weigh-in
will be at Lucky’s Landing on the north end. Please get your entry fee postmarked
by May 1 to avoid the late fee.
God Bless,
